James Carter, un saxofonista de jazz efusivo y de gran dinamismo, causó revuelo entre la crítica cuando irrumpió en la escena jazzística neoyorquina, tras mudarse de su Detroit natal a principios de los 90. Su disco debut, JC on the Set, publicado en Japón con tan solo 23 años y en Estados Unidos un año después, en 1993, fue aclamado universalmente como el mejor debut de un saxofonista en décadas.
